faith hope and love: the scientist

Laughter rings through the old wooden restaurant, like we were the only ones there. If you asked us we very well could’ve been. Silence fills the dwindling smiles; joy fades to mellow from the shared laugh just a moment ago. Down to her hand, he spoke in a voice from which the laughter’s now faded, “Do me a favor, dear?” Captivated by his shift, she inquired, “Hmm?” Then he waits. Through the tops of her lashes, she slides her curious eyes into his. He answers, “Remember this.” He uncurls his fingers, just to slide them through the gaps between hers. “Remember how sweet this is... what we have. It’ll get very complex, thus difficult, you know that.” She does know, despite having not seen the difficulty, the tragedy, the frustration. He sees it crawl from his mind into her skin. “..So let’s fight it. Fight for it together. Because it won’t be easy, but don’t waste time fighting each other. Let’s not make it more difficult than it has to be. Fight beside each other, for this. My dear, just, please... remember this.”
Down to our hands, woven tight and warm, she promised she’d remember.

If to love and love genuinely, purely, and strong is life, it won’t be easy and it won’t be painless. But, it will be beautiful. Be wise about it. It’s valuable. When you do, when you love, love with all you have. You won’t get emptied out.

Three things last forever. But above them all, love is the greatest of the deathless.

During the first step she had already given up. She broke her promise.
